Michel Ployé will be presenting his novel “Tristesse Infinie” (Infinite Sadness). “Infinite Sadness” is the story of a true event that unfolds from France’s declaration of war on Germany on September 3, 1939, until the signing of the armistice in June 1940. The author recounts, in detail, the actions and experiences of Maurice, a simple soldier mobilized on the Maginot Line, and of Cécile, his wife, who gives birth to their second son before experiencing the serious illness of their eldest son, Jean-Marie, a few weeks later. The narrative also reveals the state of mind of the French people and its evolution from the declaration of war, through the Battle of France, the defeat, the armistice, and Pétain’s rise to power.
