Circuit cyclotouristique de Pâlis à Vulaines

Departure: Pâlis. The school: the 17th-century premises being outdated and too small for an ever-increasing number of students, the town council decided in 1880 to build a new Town Hall-School on Place Gambetta in the center of the village. The building was constructed of brick by the Gauthey-Fromont company of Pâlis. Its façade faces south and its roof is dominated in the center by a bell tower. Km 10: Pouy-sur-Vanne. The Château de Pouy-sur-Vanne has a history spanning over 800 years, having been built around 1145. It has the rare distinction of combining the architecture of two major periods: the Middle Ages and the beginning of the 17th century. Km 20: Bagneaux. The sculptor Salvatore Gallo had set up his workshop in the hamlet of Les Marchais at the edge of the Bois de Boulogne. He sadly passed away in 1996. Two sculptures are still visible near his house, and his work “The Creation” majestically adorns the Villeneuve-l’Archevêque motorway rest area. Km 23: Vulaines. Located at the intersection of the D 660 and the D 54 leading to Planty, this wayside cross has a base shaped like a tomb. Its side walls are decorated with two adoring angels. Engraved on the back is this text: “Consider, O passersby, if there is any pain like that which was inflicted upon me. What will become of dry wood, if green wood has been treated thus?” Km 28: Planty. Planty, a land of boundary markers… no pun intended. The peasants, farmers, and commoners of Planty expressed their sense of ownership and attachment to their land through a boundary marker unique in the Aube region. Within a 19 km radius, over 85 boundary stones were planted to demarcate the lands of the village from those of neighboring parishes. Arrival at km 33: Pâlis.
